After months of consultation, planning and building the new play area for young people over the age of ten is nearing completion.
The play area which has received £105,000 funding from The Big Lottery Children’s Play Fund and £35,000 from Shropshire County Council is due to open to young people on Monday 27 October.
The play area is situated at the rear of the Severn Pitches and is open to all and is geared for young people over the age of ten.
Dorothy Jones, Play Development Officer for SABC said “Children and Young People as well as adults from across the borough have been involved at every stage of the development; we have visited schools, consulted at the sports village and held a consultation day in The Square. Originally we asked what type of equipment they wanted to see and from that designs were drawn up for them to decide on which was the preferred choice. The new play area is the preferred choice. The play area sits on a mound and had been built into the landscape. There are zoned areas which include a space-net and slide, a climbing zone which includes a new funky skate boarding piece, a Vega hang on and swing and some wobbly slides as well as a low level nova on which kids can balance and spin. There is also a giant bird’s nest swing which moves in all directions and can go high. All the areas have disabled access and pathways connecting them with a central point where there is a picnic table. The equipment is made from galvanised steel and new to Shrewsbury. We hope the young people using it will enjoy it and have fun.”
Alan Wallin, Head of Leisure Service said “It’s thanks to the Big Lottery Children’s Play fund which has enabled us to develop the play area at the sports village. We are delighted to have another top class play facility for the young people of Shrewsbury.”
Charles Armstrong portfolio holder for Capital Projects, Sport, Leisure and Culture said “The older child in all of us looks for adventure at times, the new adventure play area at the Sports Village will be of interest to all ages but expressly to the teenage user. This project lead by community services will fill a real gap in our service provision. Combined with the skate plaza and all weather play areas, all that are open for free play, at the village this gives a real opportunity for people to have a bit of fun in there lives whilst at the same time getting active.”
